Florence Nightingale

Florence Nightingale (1820–1910) was an English social reformer, statistician, and the founder of modern nursing. Born in Florence, Italy, she rose to prominence during the Crimean War, where she organized care for wounded soldiers in Constantinople. Her dedication to improving hygiene and living conditions greatly reduced death rates and transformed nursing into a respected profession.

Known as “The Lady with the Lamp” for making nightly rounds to comfort and care for injured soldiers, Nightingale became a symbol of compassion and dedication. Her efforts established nursing as a vital and professional field, and her legacy continues to inspire healthcare worldwide. She is honored on the British £10 banknote.
